Heron Lake Phosphorus Reduction 3 is the the third round of funding from the MPCA that provides low-interest loans for septic system replacements in the Heron Lake Watershed District.

The HLWD partnered with Minnesota Land Trust, Ducks Unlimited, and Pheasants Forever, for the Heron Lake Area Conservation Partnership to acquire land for wildlife management.

Through BWSR’s Clean Water Fund, the HLWD secured $61,500.00 to install Water and Sediment Control Basins (WASCOBs) and Wetland Restoration associated with the Judicial Ditch 3 Improvement.

Data and testing collected over a 3-year period measured and determined the benefits of using cover crop, strip-till management versus conventional tillage.

The outcome of this project will be GIS datasets, summary maps, and a technical memorandum describing the suitability for BMP placement, effect of implementation on priority resources, and the measurable cost-effectiveness of pursuing opportunities to implement BMPs.

research is being conducted through the Haney Soil Test and Soil Nitrate Test on cover crop fields established through an EPA 319 grant. Project partners will also hold a field day at the end of the grant period.
